7/31/06 ~ Yaris Works
Coming Friday, August 25th, a live art show hosted by Toyota -- featuring me, Brock Rizy, and Kristian Donaldson. More information coming soon. (CLICK HERE)
7/31/06 ~ Stumblebum interviews Emily
In this tell-all interview, Emily talks about her family, the reason she fights evil, and gives a passionate defensive over the cuteness of puppies. (CLICK HERE) I know sometimes characters can take on a life of their own, but has this gone too far?PAUL: Your grandfather is obviously intent on seeing you live in his dimension permanently. Is it just out of love or do you think it’s something else entirely?
EMILY: Sometimes I think he does it because he's bored. He wasn't this evil before he retired. Now he's got all this spare time, and it's either sitting around doing nothing or building a bigger and badder badbot. Like a hobby. Also, grandpa was an inventor. My dad is an inventor. Big competition thing going on there.

Available in the August Previews Catalog on page 334 (order code AUG063534).
Antigone Black & White, 32 pages written by David Hopkins illustrated by Tom Kurzanski SRP: $2.95
Antigone stands against King Creon for the right to bury her dead brother. This new version of the Oedipus trilogy is a Goth fantasy, mixing ancient and modern -- a dark, twisted, distorted perspective, playfully obscure. From the creators of Karma Incorporated with epilogue by Greek literature expert Aaron Nelson Thomas. I've updated my comics page with this information. Also, Silent Devil has an Antigone discussion forum.
Having taught Antigone for six years in the classroom, I'm fairly knowledgeable about this story. To retell the Oedipus myth was an exciting challenge. And working again with Tom Kurzanski? I couldn't be happier. He always brings so much skill and depth to everything he illustrates. It's just a great collaboration.
7/27/06 ~ Cover story for the Dallas Quick
Award turn local men into heroes (CLICK HERE)The Eisner Awards, the comic book industry's answer to the Oscars, gave some love to the Dallas area over the weekend. PVP, written by Scott Kurtz of Little Elm, won the Eisner for best digital comic. And Zeus Toys and Comics in Turtle Creek Village won the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailing Award. Zeus is the first Texas store to win the retail award in its 14-year history.
Richard Neal, Zeus' owner and one half of its full-time staff, said he was so shocked by his store's win that he forgot his acceptance speech. "Everything I was supposed to say went right out the window," Neal said yesterday. "I said, 'I sell your comic books, I love what I do,' then I squealed and ran off the stage."
Scott Hinze, host of Fort Worth's Fanboy Radio, said the retail prize is the Eisner with the most heated competition: "People will walk out if they don't win."
Stores are nominated by their customers. Neal credited Zeus' nomination to David Hopkins, the Arlington-based writer of Emily Edison, a graphic novel published this month by Irving's Viper Comics. "That was an honor in itself, that some of the small-press people in town nominated us," Neal said.
Hopkins said Neal, 36, has always supported local creators. Last year, Zeus bought 200 copies of his Karma Incorporated and gave them away. "It's just the sort of things that Richard does that are beyond the call of duty and rationale that make [Zeus] one of those stores you want to stand behind," Hopkins said.
7/27/06 ~ Latest review of Miss Edison
From Ain't It Cool News (CLICK HERE)David Hopkins fills this comic book with snappy dialogue and funny bits that had me giggling throughout. It's a thoroughly charming series of four stories that each stand alone but also fit together to tell a larger arc of reconciliation between Emily's estranged family members. This comic has a sweet spirit to it that is missing from so many current comic books, yet it is thoroughly modern in its style and presentation. Once again, Viper has a winner.

I'm a little embarrassed though. I said the shirt was "American Apparel" when actually, it was "Urban Outfitters". Oh the shame.
7/23/06 ~ Still in San Diego
Hey. Brock and I snuck into the Courtyard Marriott. We're using their computers to check e-mail. Comic Con has been good, but too much to write about at the moment. Congrats to Zeus Comics for winning the Eisner Spirit of Retailing Award and Scott Kurtz for winning the Eisner for best web comic.
The Emily Edison website is now online. Still rough in some spots, but I think it looks awfully good. Let others know... www.emilyedison.com
Flying out tomorrow. I'll be happy to get home. It's been a long trip.
7/16/06 ~ DFW to LAX to SD
I'm leaving for San Diego early tomorrow morning. When I return next Monday, I'm sure I'll have plenty of stuff to write about. (Remember on Thursday to check out my column -- it's all about the Eisner Awards.)

7/14/06 ~ Bloggers of Lulu
One of my favorite people has one of my favorite blogs, which is now supporting one of my favorite organizations through an odd little event called Blogathon.Marlena Hall, comic colorist (Dead@17: Protectorate, Villains back story, Karma Incorporated and others), is set to participate in 2006's blogathon for charity. On Saturday, July 29th, at 6:00 AM PST she will be updating her blog every 30 minutes for 24 hours. The (non-profit) organization she will be blogging for is Friends of Lulu. Sponsor her by going HERE. Sponsor money can be a flat pledge, or a per blog pledge. After it's over all sponsors will get an email telling them where exactly to send the money. Marlena's blog, Marlena's Empty Lunchbox, can be found HERE.
Helping her out with posting ideas will be her husband and art team partner, Benjamin Hall, who will be doing some sketches and pinups and Marlena will color some and post their progress on her blog. She will also be attending this year's San Diego Comic Con and will be writing about the convention and posting pictures from the event. For more information, please visit the blogathon website, or Marlena's website, BlueSkyComics.com, or send Marlena an email at marlena@blueskycomics.com.

7/11/06 ~ Not there yet
Brock posted some pics from our book tour, and the classic Brockesque commentary I've come to enjoy on his livejournal. http://beeow.livejournal.com/299310.html
There are several e-mails in my inbox, and I haven't responded to any of them. It's been a crazy past two days (stuff I can't get into online), but I will e-mail you back soon! I'm wanting to get a crazy head-start on my Pop Syndicate column, but I'm not there yet. I'm wanting to write some more of The Last Babysitter, but I'm not there either. Speaking of, Cal showed me the second page *rough sketch* for The Last Babysitter. It looks really good. I want to finish the script for Jack Ruby. But once again, I'm not there. (Although I did finish my Spider-Man essay for BenBella Books.) So, if you don't get an e-mail response that same day, or if I don't return your phone call, or if I don't post on this blog daily, be happy. It means I'm getting there. Basically, I need to clear out some space, so that as of September, I can start two big projects I've wanted to do for awhile -- more about those later, don't want to jinx it.
7/7/06 ~ So tired
Came home from Oklahoma last night at around 3:30 in the morning. I stayed up another 45 minutes to check e-mail. (Why? Why? Why?) And then I woke up two and a half hours later to get ready for our garage sale.
We would've been home sooner, but Oklahoma has casinos. And well, we had to go. Melissa played the penny slot machines. I played blackjack. (Won $20 at my first table, lost $19 at my second table.) Brock watched. He likes his money safe and sound. Whereas, Melissa and I kept quoting Empire Records to each other:
Lucas! Joe! Where's the money? Joe, the money is gone. Yeah, I know it's gone... but where's it gone to? Atlantic City. Atlantic City?... Is it coming back from Atlantic City? Oh, I don't think so, Joe. What's it doing in Atlantic City, Lucas? ...Recirculating. Recirculating? Yeah. Lucas, listen to me. I told Mitchell Beck that you forgot to deposit the money. I told Mitchell that the money was still here. Joe, that's not true. It's in Atlantic City... I swear. Shut up, sit down, and don't you move. It could be in other cities by now... Of course, the reason why we were there in the first place was the signing at Speeding Bullet Comics. The book tour continues. I love this store. Matt Price and everyone who works there is incredibly cool. Just a great experience all the way around. And we sold a ton of books. As in, we've got to get more books from the Viper office because we sold them all in Oklahoma. The event was mentioned in the Norman Transcript newspaper -- CLICK. The comic book store has a cafe! I had a "Wonder Woman" sandwich. I'm convinced this is the greatest sandwich in the world: ham, swiss (I think), pineapple, lettuce, and cream cheese. Good. After the signing, Matt took us to eat at Othello's. We had a great time, hanging out, talking comics, and eating more food. We were treated so well. We're definately going back to Speeding Bullet again... soon. How's Monday? ------------------------------------------------- UPDATE: If you haven't been to Pop Syndicate, my weekly column is now online -- READ IT HERE. I haven't received any comments yet. I'd love to hear from you. I got some nice e-mails from a few people. Scott McCloud mentioned it on his blog. He's accepted my challenge. (You'd have to read my column to understand.) -------------------------------------------------
7/5/06 ~ Don't call it a comeback.
The Hip-Hop Cop strikes. www.detectiveboogaloo.com

One glorious online comic strip by Jamar Nicholas.
7/5/06 ~ More press, more love
From Fanboy columnist Dan Koller, DFW Quick Girl Power Gets Real Q: This seems like an ideal book for teenage girls. Was that your target demographic?
A: I was really wanting to do something my daughter would enjoy. I wish more girls were reading comics. So in a sense, I was writing for an audience that doesn't exist, but I hope it does. A review of Emily Edison. Which reminds me, the first installment of "Beneath the Underdog" for Pop Syndicate will be up tomorrow.
7/2/06 ~ Borders Books is a wonderful, happy place
Yesterday's signing at Borders Books in Mesquite went very well. (Thanks PJ.) We were able to get the book to more people. Brock did some cool sketches... I'm a fan of the Emily-punching-out-popular-female-heroes series. And now Borders has 10 extra copies of Emily on the shelf. I promise I'll post photos soon.
Next stop, Speeding Bullet Comics in Norman, Oklahoma on Thursday.
