6/29/06 ~ Kudos from Kultur
There's a nice article in the FORT WORTH WEEKLY for June 28-July 4 on page 25. It's also available online --> http://www.fwweekly.com/content.asp?article=4024
Or if you're too lazy to click on the link...Emily, Away!
Local graphic novel writer David Hopkins is celebrating the release of his first full-length work, Emily Edison, by ... leaving town.
Stop your whinin': He's not going away permanently. He and the artist he works with, Brock Rizy, are merely embarking on a book tour that will take them through Texas, to San Diego for Comic-Con International, to Oklahoma, then back home. The dynamic duo will hit the road on July 1, shortly after a release party for Emily (Viper Comics) from noon 'til 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Dallas' Zeus Comics (Turtle Creek Village, 3878 Oak Lawn Ave., Ste. 100E; 214-219-TOYS).
Hopkins has been writing for two years and released his first series, Karma Incorporated, last year. In addition to Karma and Emily, Hopkins also contributes essays on iconographic heroes for BenBella Books' Smart Pop series (http://smartpopbooks.com). In July, he'll also begin writing an online monthly column on indie comics for the 'zine PopSyndicate.com.
As for Emily, she's just your typical superpowered teen-ager torn between her divorced super-parents' respective multi-dimensional homes and a jealous alternaverse grandfather who wants to get her all to himself by destroying Earth. Rizy's hip, blocky, graphic design-tinged art is as crafty and wry as the multi-dimensional child custody battle plotline. For more, visit www.antiherocomics.com. Thank you to everyone (and there were a lot of you) who showed up for the signing at Zeus Comics. We really appreciate the support. The release party at Ciudad was very cool.
Check out these reviews by Steven and Lisa. Very nice.
The tour continues! On Saturday, we're going to the Border's in Mesquite from 2 to 5. And then next Thursday, we'll be at Speeding Bullet Comics in Norman, Oklahoma. Then a few days later on July 8th and 9th, we'll be at the Sci-Fi Expo in Plano.
One last thing: Flight 3 is in stores now! You must get it.
6/29/06 ~ Sweet Emily
A nice article on Emily Edison from Robert Wilonsky of the Dallas Observer, READ HERE.There is no good way of recapping the plot of a comic book without sounding like a total dork. But trust me: The story's first-rate, and the art's equally impressive. (Some of Rizy's work for Emily Edison hung for a while in the bar at the Magnolia Theater; on more than one occasion I overheard patrons inquire about purchasing the pieces, which is the nicest compliment anyone could ever offer.) Fact is, despite the copious action sequences at which Rizy excels -- his work is reminiscent of that of Jack Kirby, Mike Mignola and, especially, Kyle Baker, with some anime and Kim Possible thrown in -- the story holds its own, refusing to obscure its broken-family subtext behind standard superhero derring-do. Emily Edison is now available for purchase from the Viper Comics online shop. Also, I'm proud to say Viper is SOLD OUT of Karma Incorporated #1.
6/27/06 ~ Mass mediarama
CBR has featured Emily Edison TWICE in as many weeks. Check out the interview with Brock. CLICK HERE
Other news: I was quoted in a Superman feature for the Star Telegram (READ). Although, they got the book title wrong. It should be Man from Krypton not Man of Tomorrow. The article also included quotes from my Fanboy Radio friends Scott Hinze, Oliver Tull, and Collin.
For the DFW people: Brock and I will be signing all day tomorrow at Zeus Comics from 12 to 7 pm. Afterwards, we'll move a couple doors down to Ciudad for the release party from 7 pm to 10 pm.
6/26/06 ~ Holy damn. Thanks.
Newsarama posted our press release about Antigone (from Silent Devil), which will be in the August Previews. CLICK HERE
Wow. Honestly, I never thought we'd get the chance to publish this one. Tom and I actually started work on Antigone three years ago, before we ever did Karma Incorporated. Other things came along and we put Antigone on the shelf. Now Christian Beranek and Silent Devil have given us an opportunity to revisit this story; the timing couldn't be better. I made a few revisions to the old script, and Tom is redrawing a lot of the pages he did -- so if you've seen the old five page preview, this will be different.
More information coming soon.
6/23/06 ~ IMDB for Comic Books
The Comic Book Database is pretty cool. I added Karma Incorporated and Emily Edison to the site, some more information to my profile, plus a photo pending approval (me with the pipe, of course).
If you get a chance, check it out. You can submit reviews and commentary. It'd be nice to have a thorough comic book database of everything being published.

6/17/06 ~ Psychomatic, oh psychomatic
From our dear friend Aaron Nelson:I'm working with Arcana Studios on a horror anthology called "Dark Thresholds" that will be sold in October. We're looking for creators to come to us with completed psychological horror projects by the end of August for us to include in the anthology, and everything will be creator owned. I'm one of the editors on it (and I'll have a story in it called "The In Between Space").
More information can be found at www.arcanastudio.com (there's a link at the bottom of the page that will take you directly to the forum, or simply select "Forums" and then "Dark Thresholds") Hmmm... I'll have to see if I have any horror stories in me. Maybe?
6/17/06 ~ Podomatic, oh podomatic
New podcast from Andrew Careaga you should definately check out... http://bloggedypod.podOmatic.com
6/16/06 ~ Art Death Match
For our final evening in Indianapolis (yes... been on vacation), Melissa found out about Art vs. Art. Too interesting to pass up, so we went. It'd take too long to explain. Check out the website. Anything that involves an art auction, live music, and a wheel of death is something to behold. Oh yes, there was a chainsaw ready if the art didn't score high enough on the applause-o-meter.
6/14/06 ~ CBR interview and Big Hat Books
Love Ain't Easy: David Hopkins Talks Emily Edison (click here to read)While "Emily Edison" is an all ages book, and that potentially large audience should be considered a good thing, the term "all ages" always seems to cause some people to cringe. They imagined work that has been dumbed down for younger readers or heavily "sanitized" writing -- neither of which apply to "Emily Edison." "Come on!" exclaims Hoplins. "There's more to a story than whether or not to cuss, and show blood. Heck, I would consider Steve Niles' 'Freaks of the Heartland' to be a children's story in its development and tone, almost like a fairy tale. And it's the best thing he's ever written. The real challenge for an all ages book is to tell a good story, blow their little minds, and not to hold back -- and that sometimes means upsetting the parents. J.K. Rowling has angered a fair share of adults along the way, but all she cares about is her story.
"We need more of that kind of courage with comic book creators. The problem is we've got a whole industry of very creative comic book writers who have no clue or desire to tell a kid's story. That's sad. You've got the exceptions, and god bless them, but many more well meaning people have ruined this medium for kids. We need publishers willing to take a risk. We need school libraries willing to carry our books. We need local retailers to host more kid friendly events like Free Comic Book Day, once a month." In other news: Melissa and I went to Big Hat Books, an independent bookstore located in Indianapolis' Broad Ripple area. Out of curiousity, I asked them about Emily Edison (without saying I was the writer) and it turns out they've ordered two copies! That made my day.
6/10/06 ~ We can edit this all out.
For the past year, Luke Hawkins has been working on a short film documentary about me as a writer, focusing on Karma Incorporated. I'm impressed with the work he's done. Very cool.
Just a few more interviews and then the nitty-gritty editing, but here's a sneak peek -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UEikfsjqVA

6/8/06 ~ Trying to pretend to not want to pretend to look cool
Both my Smart Pop essay and Emily Edison got a mention on today's Dallas Observer blog. (click here to read) Speaking about the essay -- "it reads like a smart-ass National Public Radio commentary" and then "I'd call him a dork, but I think he's just about the coolest guy in the whole wide world." Nice. Thanks to the super-awesome Robert Wilonsky who's also doing a more specific Emily Edison article in the coming weeks. Much appreciated.
Speaking of Smart Pop, I'll be a guest on their panel for San Diego Comic Con -- Friday, July 21st, 2:30 PM in room 1B.
The final details are being made for our Emily Edison book tour. I'll post the full schedule either later tonight or tomorrow.
Also, I've updated links on my site. If there's anything missing, let me know. I added IDW, Mangled Stare, Stumblebum Studios, Art Prostitute, La Reunion, and Ninety-Five Design.
6/6/06 ~ A New Antihero
You might notice that things look a little different around here. It's a newly designed Antihero Comics. Ta-da! Cozy, isn't it? Special thanks to Dai Balawajder and Ninety-Five Design for the new site. Check out their website, not only for the spiffy design work, but they also sell buttons, stickers, t-shirts, and other cool swag. And Dai loves comics.

6/4/06 ~ Art Prostitute in Deep Ellum
Last night, I met up with Kristian at the Art Prostitute opening in Deep Ellum. The event included an exhibit by Dave Kinsey, whose art reminds me a bit of Paul Hornschemeier. The store/gallery is really cool. We need a place like this in Dallas to feature alternative print design and art, especially one friendly to comics -- I saw books by Chip Kidd, Chris Ware, Top Shelf, and a few minicomics. If you live in the Dallas area, I highly recommend checking it out. Daniel was there, which only proves we were at a hip, hip place (because of course, he's one hip mofo). Daniel's working on some cool stuff right now -- music, art community, and modifying his bike. Anyone know how to weld?
Some photos I took with my lovely new cellphone...

After the party, Kristian and I went to Cafe Brazil, got something to eat, went to Elm Street Bar and then July Alley. Spent most of the time talking about comics, relationships, and family. Good evening.
6/2/06 ~ Foundry and Harvey
The June issue of Comic Foundry is now online -- absolutely one of the best sites when it comes to reporting, profiles and interviews.
Make sure to check out the article "Read This, Fund Your Own Comic". I was quoted at the end:"BitPass can do for comics what iTunes is doing for music," Hopkins says. "And it can be profitable." But what the industry needs, he says, is a mega-networking portal that can host literally hundreds of different creators and their individual portfolios -- rather than require the reader to seek out each creator individually. In other news: Holy crap! Daisy Kutter got nominated for a Harvey Award, and deservedly so. If you haven't read Daisy Kutter, it's amazing. Not only that, Joshua Fialkov and his book Elk's Run received seven nominations! Adhouse's Project Superior got a well-earned nomination for Best Anthology. Congratulations to all of you. (the complete list)
6/1/06 ~ Essays and html
Working on a new essay for an upcoming Smart Pop Book. So far, so good. Which reminds me, if you haven't already, check out Man from Krypton.
Great website: Pop Syndicate. Starting in July, I'll be writing a weekly column for them. I'm working hard to make it something unique. More details soon.
Ninety-Five Design is almost finished with my new website. Hopefully, it'll be online by middle of June.
As of today, Melissa and I have been married four years. Happy Anniversary!
