3/29/06 ~ More pre-order info

A reminder to those wanting to pre-order the Emily Edison graphic novel, make sure to do this before April 15th. Most retailers send their orders at mid-month.

To make it easier for you, I've created a ready-made order form. All you have to do is print the form, and take it to your local comic book shop.

Don't know where your closest shop is? Click here for the Comic Shop Locator.

Stores don't always order in bulk with graphic novels, as they do with comics. So if you're planning to buy it anyways, I'd recommend pre-ordering. Thanks!

3/28/06 ~ Looking for a few thousand friends

Emily Edison is now on MySpace. I don't know how effective it is as a form of promotion, but I'm willing to try. I like the idea of finding people who share an interest in indie/small press comics and making direct contact with them. However, there's so much stuff going on at MySpace, it's easy to be lost in the chaos.

Can we build a MySpace fanbase? If you're an internet junkie with some time to spare, visit Emily and send her a message. We could use your help.

3/26/06 ~ Did somebody mention Karma?

Out of curiousity (and a little vanity), I visited Mile High Comics website to see if they had any copies of Karma Incorporated still for sale. For some odd reason, the price jumped from $3 (which it had been only a month ago) to $9 for a NM copy of #1?! And $8.50 for a NM copy of #3?! What happened? Did Wizard magazine mention us? Did Jennifer Contino say kudos to Hopkins and Kurzanski? Did we win some funky award? Or, the most likely scenario, maybe they only have a few copies left and figure, what the hell?

Confused, and slightly pleased, I went to eBay. And sure enough, five Karma Incorporated items currently on auction, issues of #1 and #3, priced at around $5 to $6 with a generous $4 to $7 for shipping. I clicked on an item, and the first line put me back in my place, "Not the best Viper book but it's worth a look." Ummm... thanks?

At Midtown Comics, the price went down a bit, but they also don't have any copies of #2. Did anyone read issue two? And at Lone Star, the price dropped. Now $2.40 and they have issue two in stock. Of course, the Viper Comics shop has all three, plus the San Diego variant, at cover price.

But did you hear that? Huh? According to some eBay seller, we're worth a look. Hell yeah. I'm going to party tonight!

3/25/06 ~ Fanboy Radio opens the phone lines this Sunday

Press release:
The only internationally syndicated broadcast about comic books has heard it's audience and is bringing back an 'Open Lines' show this Sunday at 6pm Central (7pm Eastern, 4pm Pacific). Tune in for an hour of comic book chat with the in-studio crew and your calls as Fanboy Radio asks which comics you love, and which ones you loath. It's a 'Comic Call-Out' and your opinion will be heard!

Most of Fanboy Radio's episodes feature interviews with professional comic book creators and include live callers from around the world. "These shows are a fun combination of a panel at a convention and those wacky message boards." says show host, Scott Hinze. "Guests are very accessible and open but can also reach non-readers in a unique way. Rabid fans can still flame a professional (and I'll generally let them), but it takes a while lot more hutzpah than an anonymous Internet forum. When there is a comic book creator on the show, they receive the spotlight and we don't usually talk about comics as a whole. But this Sunday, anything and everything is fair game. So open up your long box, tune in and give us a call -- I'll probably get myself in trouble!"

Fanboy Radio's other host Oliver Tull adds, "I love these shows because they allow us not only to get into the brains of the comic fans, but to scoop out those brains and step upon them aggressively and repeatedly. That, and we can talk about what's going on in the world of comics without the usual veneer of civility we have when the creators are on. Did i mention the brain stepping?"

Along with discussion and opinions about recent comic reads and industry news, Oliver and Scott promise to cover the #1 movie in America, V for Vendetta, the Ultimate Avengers DVD, the news from Wizard World LA, all of the trailers for this summer's hot comic book flicks and a whole lot more! So join Scott, Oliver and the rest of the FbR Crew this Sunday for 'Comic Call-Out' on the comic book show that cares -- Fanboy Radio, The Voice of Comics.

To inquire about guest solicitations, syndication, sponsorship or more show information please email Scott Hinze directly at scott@fanboyradio.com

3/23/06 ~ Fly Emily! Fly!

Emily Edison is finished. It's all done. Last night, Brock and I went over every page and then sent it to Viper. And how fitting too, the April Previews catalog came out yesterday. On page 355 --
EMILY EDISON GN
by David Hopkins & Brock Rizy
Emily Edison's teenage life is a blur --
homework, slumber parties, unrequited
crushes, school dances... and a jealous
grandfather planning to destroy the Earth!
Reality hangs in peril, and Emily must use
her otherworldly powers to save the place
she calls home in the ultimate interdimen-
sional custody battle! Introduction by Dave
Crosland, artist of Puffed, Heaven LLC,
and Bad Ideas. [ C: 0-0-2 ]
SC, 9x6, 144 pgs, FC...................$12.95
The order code is APR063434. As you may know, without belaboring the point, pre-orders are important for small press creators. There's no guarantee your local retailer will carry this particular book or order enough copies (a lot of stuff in that catalog), unless you pre-order it. Find the person behind the counter and say, "I'd like to pre-order Emily Edison... please." Give them the code, and they should be able to help you out.

Brock and I are very happy about the cover price. 144 pages, full color for $12.95. You'd be hard pressed to find a better value for a graphic novel, which is important. Younger kids interested in the book can't necessarily afford something more expensive. And I don't want price to stand in the way of a good read.

Coming soon: Emily animated. Oh yes.

3/21/06 ~ Pages and panels

For those people who enjoy reading scripts, I added the complete Karma Incorporated script (issues 1-3) to the comics section.

Essentially, a comic book script is correspondence from the writer to the artist. It's not intended for mass consumption. And often times, these scripts reveal something about the working relationship between the two people. You can see how the artist interprets the script, and translates it into art. I love this process.

3/19/06 ~ Updates on website

I added my forum to the top of the website. (Say hello, if you haven't already.) I also added cover art to the comics section, and made a few changes/additions to the other projects section.

3/19/06 ~ The Most Uncoolest Post

Between Thursday and Friday, I went from SXSW in Austin to All-Con in Dallas. This drive was more than simple geography. It marked the greatest pressure shift ever from the obscenely hip to the shamelessly geeked-out. At SXSW, everyone is a rock star, even the ugly people are pretty. At All-Con, intelligent people capable of curing cancer have invested their efforts into Star Wars and Lord of the Rings trivia.

We choose our friends and enemies based around a subculture of shared interests. Your likes and dislikes are more than a matter of taste. Personal taste and style now represents a life statement, a guiding philosophy.

SXSW and All-Con exist as the ying and yang of personal taste. What is profound? What is superficial? I have no idea.

3/18/06 ~ Comic Book Appreciation Day

Press release from the immortal Sean Jackson:
The City of Dallas has proclaimed that Free Comic Book Day is also Comic Book Appreciation Day in honor of CAPE! (Comic and Pop-Culture Expo)! The biggest Free Comic Book Day event in Texas is honored to receive this and will be honored with a certificate.

"Recognizing the hard work that comic book creators put into their books and paying respect to them is what CAPE! is about," says Zeus Comics and Toys owner Richard Neal, 'The fact that the City of Dallas is recognizing this as well is a true honor."

CAPE! also promotes children's literacy by giving away over 300 child specific gift bags filled with comic books designed just for them. 'It's important that we encourage people of all ages to read and what could be a better medium than comic books," says HeroRealm.com founder Alex Hamby.

CAPE! is in its second year and was created by Zeus Comics and Toys, Scott Kurtz of PvPonline.com fame and the people at HeroRealm.com as a venue to recognize comic creators and the work they do. Scott Hinze of Fanboy Radio will be back this year to MC the event. The first year saw over 2500 people and three times that are expected this year. With a guest list that includes Bryan Hitch, Gail Simone, Tony Bedard, Marc Andreyko, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Lea Hernandez, James O'Barr, Benn Dunn and more, CAPE! Is set to be the biggest Free Comic Book Day event of the year!

For more information on CAPE or if you are a comic professional who wants to attend please visit www.herorealm.com/cape or call Zeus comics at 214-219-TOYS.

3/15/06 ~ Don't hate me because I'm wonderful.

Comics greatest writer Alan Moore in a rare interview (courtesy of YouTube).

The word "genius" is overused. Nowadays, anyone who achieves greatness is referred to as one. In my opinion, Alan Moore is the only person in comics who is quite possibly "genius". Everyone else is just really, really, really talented. Moore understands the medium on complex levels we haven't even considered. At times, it's difficult to enjoy his work, because I'm simply trying to comprehend it.

Watch this video, before you see the "V for Vendetta" movie this weekend.

3/13/06 ~ The perfect alibi

The 7th Dallas Comic Con will be April 29th-30th. I've been included as a guest. I should have a few copies of the Man from Krypton book available, if you haven't pre-ordered your's yet. Hint much?

Hope to see you there. If for no other reason, come and get your photo with the dad from Family Ties!

3/13/06 ~ Happy Bullets on YouTube

Their first music video "Drinking of the Job"
Filmed by Ryan Sumner and his crew. Runtime: 03:36

At Tower Records "Mr. Gray"
Filmed by Taylor Van Amburgh, Will Dowdy, and Eric Grubbs. Edited by Taylor Van Amburgh. Runtime: 03:48

For both these videos, when viewing on Youtube, they will be 'smooshed' unless you change the ratio on the bottom right side of the player to the smallest ratio... then it will be displayed in 16:9 ratio and will look (and play) right.

3/13/06 ~ Emily for the masses

For the past few months, Brock has been working non-stop on the Emily Edison TPB. 144 pages, full color. He's moved into a pace that would make the 24 hour comic book day an underachievement. From his livejournal--
After deadline. It seems like all I talk about is what I'm going do do after the deadline (one week and one half from now). Improve my health by way of diet and excercise (I actually thought, without intended irony, "I should get a microwave, so I can start eating better.") Get a girlfriend (with a cool name probably, with freckles maybe, without a beau definitely). Watch the Alien Quadrilogy (two different versions of each film-a daunting task). Animate a fuckin' website (with a slightly more leisurely schedule constraint than my book). Acquire new eyeglasses and contact lenses (which means an appointment with the eye doctor). Sleep (the day after Staple and Oscar weekend, I slumbered all day, and that's not hyperbolic of me to say). Catch up on my Arrested Development Finale (at David's on the DVR). Draw Wolverine (or at least something besides Emily Edison). Turn twenty-seven years of age (I already have the Alien Quadrilogy, so don't buy it for me).
Artwork from "monty" posted on his myspace comments--

Coming in the next few months: Emily Edison in the April Previews, postcards sent to various comic retailers, gallery exhibit, online interviews, Free Comic Book Day, Cape, launch of the flash animated site, Dallas Comic Con, release party at Minc Lounge, San Diego Comic Con

All good stuff.

3/11/06 ~ Good music = Good life

Paper Jones. Remember that name. This band is one of the best things I've heard since Happy Bullets' Vice and Virtue Ministry (What?! you don't have that CD yet? For shame! iTunes, go now!)

Anyways... the Paper Jones EP will be available on iTunes in a few months, but you can preview their music at the CD baby website and purchase a limited edition CD. Paper Jones website.

3/9/06 ~ Profoundly MySpace

I've long asserted that MySpace is a pit of hell, the idiot epicenter of the Internet. Sure, I have a profile on the site, but that doesn't make the first statement any less true. In fact, it might validate what I said. However, today I was checking out a particular profile and I stumbled upon one of the most touching and oddly profound "about me" blurbs I've ever read. Not any goofy drinking or Spring Break pics or a run down of a person's accomplishments and current geography, but a simple quirky life statement that really touched me:
My existence has brought me through many life changing experiences. These events don't shape me they have molded me into who I am if you cant deal with it keep walking!!!! To this day I can't put into words who I am so that you'll understand and some how my best friend in the whole world has figured me out. Most of the time I am figuring things out for the first time. As of right now I'm looking forward to going to college....my major is Kinesiology and I'm contemplating in majoring in art as well . I'd like to explore the possibility of getting my masters in medicine in the future. Recently I found a new passion for illustration and finding weird ways around photography.... I'm simple, crazy, and weird... I'm just trying to live this so-called life one day at a time...and I'm trying not to trip and land face first into life. So everyday I climb (sometimes fall) out of bed throw on something clean and my day begins.....I LOVE TOAST!!!! Secret to life very very important: "It feels like a pamona day...3-10-05." If you cant figure out what you want, join everyone else in this life long journey because you're not alone.
It's my sister Lizz. I consider myself very fortunate to be her brother -- she's got it more figured out than she realizes. I love toast too.

Soundtrack: Always Love by Nada Surf

3/8/06 ~ I love this song!

From Jim Lujan's blog:
My good buddy, Gras, did a little animation to go along with a song my daughter Julia made up (at 4 yrs old)... "Wolf Day". It's wonderfully bizarre. It stars a little maggot named Megan and a guitar strumming wolf. As you'll see, Julia is quite the song writer, just like Daddy! **click and enjoy**

3/7/06 ~ Ready for pre-order

THE MAN FROM KRYPTON: A CLOSER LOOK AT SUPERMAN

(available on Amazon)

BenBella Books - Smart Pop Series
ISBN 1932100776
240 pages (scheduled release May 1, 2006)

I contributed an essay to this lovely anthology. It may be the closest I ever get to Superman, so let's enjoy it while it lasts!

Yesterday, I received a pdf file of the book. I had the chance to look through it, proof read my essay (again) and look over other people's essays. There's some high quality geeked-out stuff.

I think the cover featured on Amazon is outdated. I'm not sure about Mark Millar being the guest editor. Other obligations and such? Also, I didn't see any articles from Mark Waid or Ben Affleck. If I find a newer version of the cover, I'll make sure to post it.

3/6/06 ~ And we're back.

Monday. Dragging my feet. This weekend wore us out. Kennedy and Finny spent the weekend at Melissa's parents house, while we went down to Austin for Staple. Friday night, I stayed up until after 1 AM, getting ready and cutting those postcards. (Speaking of, I have a few left over. E-mail me the address of your favorite comic book store and I'll send some their way in April, when Emily is in Previews.) Woke up on Saturday at 4:45 AM to make the drive. Picked up Brock, and off we went. The drive up there and back were both pretty good. Brock and I talked about the book, went over a lot of details for what we need to do in the next few months, and just talked comics in general. Melissa had our new portable DVD player (Christmas gift) in the back seat, watched Josie and the Pussycats.

Staple was great. The Red Oak Ballroom is actually part of an old mall, the back half was converted and remodelled to office space and a convention center. Brock and I met a lot of people. Handed out postcards. Did some sketches. (I love the robot one Brock did for Marlena.) We had a preview of chapter two available for people to check out, and got some great responses. Excuse my utter lack of modesty, but peope are going to LOVE this book. Brock showed me the b&w pages for chapter four. He's coloring all this week. Chapter four looks great, possibly my favorite. Certainly, it's an exciting conclusion. I kept reading the last two pages over and over and over again. Thinking to myself, that's it. That's the story. I'm in love with the last two pages. While Emily was the focus for our trip, I did sell quite a few sets of issues 1-3 of Karma Incorporated. My friend Zack came down. We met up later that night. Great guy.

Staple was much more laid back than WWTX, so it gave us the opportunity to hang out more with Mahfood and Crosland. After the event, we all went to Star of India for dinner. Good spicy food. Buffet style, which is always dangerous. The best spinage mush stuff I've ever eaten! From Star of India to the hotel to 6th street. The Ritz is a very cool bar/club. Lots of levels and stairs, a cool place to spend a few hours, listen to a DJ spinning some good records, and watch the Silky Bureaucrats make art. Melissa, Brock, and I lasted until about 2 AM. We closed out the place, but couldn't last any longer. We were dead tired!

Next morning, slept in and then ate lunch at Chuy's, then drove home.

Later that day, Melissa, Kennedy, and I went to the season opener of the Dallas Derby Devils. There was a huge crowd. I felt bad, because I ran into a friend who I hadn't seen in years, but I was so distracted handling Kennedy and figuring out where I needed to be, I probably came off as a jerk. I'm sorry. Melissa volunteered at the event, helping out with fliers and keeping the track clear. Kennedy and I had to leave early. Bedtime and all that. Melissa came in much later. I had already crashed.

Photos will be posted soon.

3/3/06 ~ As seen on TV

Today, I got this e-mail from Raina Telgemeier.
Last year when I was in Toronto, I was interviewed by
Mark Askwith for The Space Channel, a cable network in
Canada. They have just now posted the clip on their
website. It's a one-minute featurette on me, and on my
book! Please check it out:

PC users, use this link.

Mac users, use this link.

Pretty neat, huh? The official release date of The
Baby-sitters Club is April 1, but it'll be showing up
on store shelves through March, so you'll have to keep
an eye out. All online orders through sites like
Amazon will ship on April 1.

3/2/06 ~ The buzz on Emily

Benjamin Hall posted a pin-up for Emily Edison on the Drawing Board forums. There's been a great response to the art and the character, including from Mike Wieringo! I take this as a very good omen.

Click here to read the positive energy.

3/2/06 ~ Write Josh! Write!

Joshua Fialkov, creator of Elk's Run and Western Tales of Terror (website), has two new projects coming around the bend. Both look fascinating. Josh has a real sense of finding artistic talent, and developing unique stories.
