11/30/05 ~ Watch this show!

I'm really enjoying The Comedians of Comedy.
Comedian Patton Oswalt takes to the road with his friends Brian Posehn, Zach Galifianakis, and Maria Bamford to tour indie rock clubs rather than conventional comedy clubs. We spend about half of the time watching their stand-up routines and the other half just following them around in their daily lives as they tour--buying comic books, getting in trouble in the Cracker Barrel gift shop, and goofing around between shows.
So far, my favorite moment is when the four go see a group therapist. Zach thinks it's going to be a humourous little bit, but the other three really get into the session and try an intervention with Zach about his "issues".

11/29/05 ~ The Casting Game

Okay, I'll admit it--I'm fixating on this casting thing for Karma Incorporated. But hey, I'd love to see a Karma Incorporated movie, and so I play it out in my mind. Here's my picks (click here). Agree? Disagree? Any other characters you'd suggest?

11/26/05 ~ I was born without a fear gene.

I don't know if I'm allowed to say how I got this, but I obtained in the mail today a copy of the unaired pilot for "Fearless". A show starring Rachael Leigh Cook and Ian Somerhalder, which was supposed to run on the WB in 2003. It was pushed back to midseason and then cancelled. My tape is not a bootleg. This is an actual special review copy released direct from the WB. To my anonymous supplier, I thank you. What a nifty little pop culture artifact!

I watched it. Not bad, rather Mod Squad-esque. Rachael looks lovely. Although, there's no way to say the line "I was born without a fear gene" without it sounding lame. Sorry. Otherwise, it would've been fun.

11/23/05 ~ Don't we look pretty?

I've added new photos to the scrapbook -- family reunion, Dallas Comic Con, House Party, and Wizard Word Texas. (click here)

11/23/05 ~ MySpace updates

For anyone with a MySpace account, we just started a Viper Comics Group.

http://groups.myspace.com/vipercomics

The place to discuss all things: Dead@17, Daisy Kutter, Oddly Normal, Random Encounter, Middleman, Karma Incorporated, The Protectorate, plus webcomics You'll Have That and The Horrible Pirates-- in addition to the several upcoming titles in 2006.

11/18/05 ~ Spirit of Comics Retailer Award

I sent in my nomination last year, but I'm making a stronger push for Zeus Comics this year. Fact is there are a lot of great retailers in the DFW area. We've been fortunate. However, if we can make a collective drive to get Zeus this special Eisner Award, one they deserve, I think that would be cool.

On a personal level, they've supported me and my own work beyond the call of duty (or rationality). They got my wife hooked on comics, to where she would go to Zeus without me. I consider Richard, Barry, and Chris to be good friends, and I feel a deep need to do this for them.

Here's the ballot:
http://antiherocomics.com/retaileraward.pdf

You'll need to fax the ballot in or mail it yourself.

Other details--
Retailer's Name: Richard Neal
Store name: Zeus Toys and Comics
Complete Store Address: Turtle Creek Village, 3878 Oaklawn Ave, Suite 100E, Dallas, TX 75219
Store phone number: 214-219-8697

Thanks!

11/17/05 ~ TV series? That'd be cool.

Karm Incorporated #3 made "comic book of the week" at www.needcoffee.com. (click here)
They're a company that specializes in being transparent. Ninja-like, they bring karma to bear on those who need a little something extra bad to happen to them. Got a boss you need revenge on? An ex? Anybody? They'll hook you up with what the cosmos takes too long to get around to. And over the course of this series from Viper Comics, one of their past cases comes back to haunt them. This is so dying to be a TV series it's not even funny. We're enjoying the hell out of this book: it's funny, it's got a nice trace of bitterness, and we have no idea where the hell it's going.

11/13/05 ~ 4 8 15 16 23 42

My NaNoWriMo efforts are beginning to fizzle in a major way. Personally, I blame Lost Season One DVD. Just can't stop watching. I'm hooked.

Also, we've adopted a dog. Melissa is picking him up from the Humane Society tomorrow. (pic 1 | pic 2)

I'm going to try to write some more tonight. Hopefully, I can get back in the game and fail with a more respectable word count than I currently have.

11/11/05 ~ Comic book family

As posted on Melissa's MySpace blog...

(aka super dad whose kids have awesome sketchbooks)

11/10/05 ~ Full of Grace

The Mary Project is one of the coolest sketch collections I've seen--comic book artists giving their interpretation of the Virgin of Gudalupe.

Not to mention it includes some of my favorite artists--Cal Slayton, Josh Howard, Robbi Rodriguez, Chris Herndon, Chris Moreno, Dave Crosland, Jim Mahfood, Joe Riley, Samax Randolph, Tom Kurzanski, Benjamin Hall, and Ryan Cody.

11/9/05 ~ You'll Have That

I'm happy to say that Andy reads Karma Incorporated. Check out You'll Have That, a hilarious comic strip by the talented Wes Molebash.

11/8/05 ~ Four stars

The Indy Comic Review likes Karma Incorporated.
review for issue one
review for issue two
(issue three review coming soon)

Also, our Karma Incorporated forums have be rather uneventful lately. If you dig this comic, let your voice be heard. (Please?) We haven't even done the obligatory "casting" thread yet. Sheesh. :)

11/8/05 ~ WWTX Day Three

Everyone was understandably worn out on the last day. A lot of friends showed up on Sunday, which was cool. Luke Hawkins interviewed Tom for a short film documentary. Luke has been working really hard on this project. More information coming soon once we get closer to the release.

Josh, Laura, Luke, Ben, Marlena, Tom, Melissa, Kennedy, and I went to Red Hot & Blue afterwards for a post-WWTX dinner. The hot sauce about killed me.

Beyond that, not a whole lot to report. And yes, photos coming soon.

11/7/05 ~ WWTX Day Two

Saturday was the busiest day. Even still, turnout was uncharacteristically low for this convention. A lot of people suggested this was due to NASCAR weekend. However, I think it may be because Wizard World Texas was scheduled so close to Dallas Comic Con. Maybe a lot people already got their con fix? Would you rather pay $10 or $40 to attend a comic book convention? Much respect to Mark Walters and the work he's done. At the Dallas Comic Con, Melissa was able to meet and get her photo with Adam Baldwin for free. To even say "hi" to Summer Glau at Wizard World, it would cost $30. Fact is, for what you get, 3-day Wizard World admission is too high. The cost for exhibitor booths is too high. If the organizers can't find a way to make the numbers work otherwise, they may be in a lot of trouble. And hey, I only saw two stormtroopers the whole weekend.

That's not to say Wizard World wasn't a good event--only that turnout was low. The small press/artist alley was INCREDIBLE. So much talent. Definately, the best part of the con (during show hours).

Karma Incorporated sold well at the Viper booth. More so, I'm excited to have new readers. Tom did some great sketches. He gave Melissa this really cool Nancy Drew.

The Fanboy Radio Art Show with Mahfood and Crosland. Dang. I'll be posting photos soon. I promise. This party was crazy--the DJ, the artists, the people there. We had a lot of fun. Melissa and I bought the first piece from Mahfood. We're going to hang it in our living room.

From there, Brock (read his WWTX report), Adam, and I went from there to the Wizard World Industry Party. Hung out with some friends.

11/5/05 ~ WWTX Day One

Technically, this is "day two", but I didn't have time to post yesterday.

So far, the convention is going really well. Of course, this is the first Wizard World Texas where I have a comic book to sell and not simply looking for a publisher. The Viper fans have been very supportive. Tom is in town, which has been a lot of fun. He showed me the first five pages of Karma Incorporated: Vice & Virtue, and they look incredible. I love these characters, no other word is more appropriate.

I've been volunteering at the ACTOR booth again. Terry Moore is there as a special guest of ACTOR. I'm such a fan. Both he and his wife Robyn have to be some of the nicest people too.

The talented Raven Gregory, writer of The Gift (published by Image) gave us a shout out on his letters page for issue 13:
"Karma Incorporated from Viper Comics. If you ever wanted to get revenge on your boss or whoever, this is some funny stuff. It made me smile"
I talked with Raven yesterday. Very cool guy.

The cook-out went very well. We had a good time. And like last year, we had more people there than I could keep track of. I hope everyone got a burger, but I'm not sure. I was grilling them as fast I could. There's probably more to be said, but I don't really have the time right now.

I've been taking pictures. And will upload them to the site soon.

11/3/05 ~ Let's Get Lost

Chapters two and three of my illustrated prose "Let's Get Lost" has been posted on the Velvet Goat website. Thank you Justin for all your help.

Chapter 1: Everything is going to be all right.
Chapter 2: The Good Idea
Chapter 3: Brain damage and the 700 Club

I'll probably take off the month of November (for NaNoWriMo reasons), but expect the story to continue in December.

11/3/05 ~ Updates

The prior dog-plan fell through. So instead, next week, we'll start looking for a pup, going to animals rescue shelters. We want a dog that's a few years old, so he/she will be better around kiddos. Puppies bite, scratch, and jump too much for Kennedy's tastes. We're excited. Kennedy loves dogs. Last night, she was holding a toy block with a dog on it. She started saying "doggie".

I'm picking up Tom from the airport in a few hours. He's already pencilled the first 5 pages of a possible second series for Karma Incorporated (Karma Incorporated: Vice & Virtue). I haven't seen the pages yet, but he's very happy with them. I think his exact words were: "I love 'em. I want to kiss and snuggle them, but fear paper cuts." ...maybe I've said too much.

I'm not making the pace I wish I was with NaNoWriMo. I was hoping to be further along, especially with Wizard World Texas this weekend. I won't get much done. And last night, I got distracted by Lost Season One DVD. Who knows? Maybe I can pull a few all nighters some weekend and catch up?

For those going to Wizard World Texas, I'll be at the Viper Comics booth promoting Karma Incorporated (all three issues now available). I'm also volunteering at the ACTOR booth a few hours each day.

Tomorrow, Melissa and I have our 2nd annual cook-out. If you're interested in coming, you can read more about it here.

Also, Dead@17: Protectorate #1 came out yesterday in stores. Pick up a copy. I read it yesterday, and it's really good stuff. Kudos to Alex, Ben, and Marlena.

11/1/05 ~ NaNoWriMo Day 1

Last night, I wrote 1,343 words between 12 midnight at 1:30 AM. My goal was 2,000 words, but I came to a stopping point and figured it was best to call it a night.

I don't have a title yet. But here's an excerpt from the first few paragraphs.
Paula was hiding in the tall grass smoking her father's Marlboro Lights when she heard the gunshot. The sound startled her. She instinctively put out the cigarette and exhaled, waving her hand in front of her face hoping to brush away the smell of smoke. Paula had been hiding her smoking habit for five years now. No one at school questioned why she always smelled like smoke. The assumption was she hung out with her dad. Her dad smoked, and there you go. Truth be told, she only saw her dad a few minutes each evening when he sat in front of the TV to get the dinner she prepared.

Paula looked up along the grass line to see if anyone was there. She couldn't see anything over the sloping hill a quarter mile away. A cigarette wasted for no good reason. She sat down again, pulled out another cigarette and used about five matches before she lit this one.

On the other side of the hill, a light blue Cadillac was parked in the middle of the deserted cow pasture--the driver side door open, the trunk also open. Laying in the grass, in front of the car, the body of East Texas State University's psychology professor Allen Rose. A light breeze moved the grass and the thinning hair on his head, his beard. The gunshot took a good portion of the right side of his head off. Dead, but his legs and arms still twitched a bit. The blood pooled beneath him, staining a perfectly nice Polo shirt.
