8/30/05 ~ From Europe with love

The trailer/pilot for the highly anticipated Sequential Art documentary is now available on the official website. (click here)

Writer/director Espen Jörgensen is still hard at work on the film, but it promises to be a incredible achievement, focusing on the pioneers who helped shape the medium as well as some of the most interesting contemporary artists and writers. The film features interviews with Will Eisner, Chris Ware, Christine Norrie, Judd Winick, Scott McCloud, Jim Mahfood, Scott Morse, Neil Gaiman, and Daniel Clowes among others.

8/28/05 ~ By the numbers

Does Karma Incorporated as a "team book" really balance out? Yes, I was bored and this is what I came up with. (click here)

8/25/05 ~ Debut

On Wednesday, August 31st, I will be at Zeus Toys & Comics (all day) signing copies of Karma Incorporated #2.

Artist, friend, and Emily Edison collaborator Brock Rizy will also be there doing sketches. Brock illustrated the back cover for issue two.

Zeus has always been incredibly supportive of local comic book creators. To promote the series, they're offering issue two for free with a $10 purchase. The promotional starts on 8/31/2005 while supplies last.

8/24/05 ~ Adding content

I've made additions to my blog list. I know I'm missing some good stuff that's out there. If you can think of any blogs I'd like, please post the URL in the comments and I'll make sure to add it.

8/23/05 ~ Coming Soon

Stuff that looks good...
Everything is Illuminated (trailer) Visually interesting.
Shopgirl (trailer) Welcome back, Claire.
Fun with Dick and Jane (trailer) Suburban caper - looks fun
Thumbsucker (trailer) I can't believe I started crying while watching this trailer. I'm such a wuss.

8/23/05 ~ Desperate bar-owners

Tuesday nights on FX, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, absolutely love it. Favorite new show. Melissa's friend introduced us to it, and now I'm sharing the love with you. (review from Variety dot com)

8/22/05 ~ The Vowell Wannabe Club

Yesterday's art night went amazingly well. The museum itself is beautiful. I'm proud to have such a great modern art museum, which features local talent, in my hometown. The current exhibit (unrelated to Axxess) with Tommy Fitzpatrick is truly impressive. Axxess showcased some of their own artists, and the paintings ranged in talent, novice explorations to more experienced development. It was a real treat.

The event was divided into two acts. The performances varied greatly with spoken word art, prose readings, poetry, drama, and song. I was the second person to take the stage. I followed an amazing spoken word artist-- a true professional who had at one time shared a stage with Maya Angelou.

I felt good about my reading. I read an excerpt from chapter three of the online novel I'm writing, titled Let's Get Lost (available on Velvet Goat). Melissa said it went well, and gave me, what I would consider to be the highest praise. "It sounded like something you would hear on NPR / This American Life by someone like Sarah Vowell." Wow. That made my day.

Let's Get Lost is my first attempt at a novel. I'm sure I'm going about it all wrong, but we'll see what happens.

8/21/05 ~ Chapter three

Tonight (7 pm) at the Arlington Museum of Art, I will be reading an excerpt from my online novel "Let's Get Lost" as part of the Axxess Art Night. Anyone who lives in the area, feel free to come. Sorry I didn't post this information sooner.

8/18/05 ~ Updates

To improve the overall quality of this website, I've added some new content to the comics section.

Some Other Day (read it online | full script)
Fight to Live (read it online | full script w/ annotations)
CFI: Silent Forest (read it online | full script)
The Stranger Waits for Me (read it online | full script)
The Sparrow (read it online | full script)

More changes and additions coming soon.

8/17/05 ~ 20 Questions

Jim Lujan and I decided to interview each other. (click here to read my interview with Jim) Here are the questions he had for me.

What do you think of people that wear a lot of jewelry? They probably have low self-esteem and are looking for some way to add worth to themselves.

What is your favorite city to visit? San Diego. I've never been to New York City, but I'd love to go.

Do you currently bite your nails? Yes. My mom bites her nails and I think I got the habit from her.

Do you remember your dreams in the morning? Rarely.

How old were you when you got your drivers license? Sixteen. I was a high school freshman at the time.

What is a bad TV show that love? I like the show Yes, Dear. Although, it's kinda lame.

What is your favorite musical instrument? The piano.

Can you cry on demand? Not on demand. I'd need a little prep time. In high school, I was in a few plays. For one production, I had to have a nervous breakdown. That was fun.

Ever been bitten by a human? Probably. I can't remember any specifics.

Who's your favorite Beatle? Paul. But lately, George is a close second place.

When I say God... what goes through your mind? Holy. Although it seems many Christians don't know what that word means anymore. Now it's just a word in some crappy song about how "Jesus is my emotionally-dependent buddy".

Do you prefer to be the photographer or photographed? It's changed over the past year. I now prefer being the photographer.

Do you like Indian food? Yep.

Where were you when you first heard about 9/11? In the computer lab at school

What does your hair look like long? A mess of random curls and frizz

Do fish have feelings? Sharks are fish. And they look like they get pretty pissed-off, so yeah.

Are you a better dancer or athlete? Athlete, although I'm not great at either.

What do you think of Dennis Weaver? I have no idea who that is.

What is truly nerdy to you? Roleplaying Games.

If I gave you $1000 to spend in the next 30 minutes... what would you do? I'd probably put it in the bank, because Melissa would kick my ass if I spent $1000 in 30 minutes... we've got bills to pay! But if I had to, I'd jump in my car, haul ass to Ikea to buy a book shelf and a new kitchen table.

8/16/05 ~ Always revising

In about a month, I will be making some changes to this website.

1. By popular demand: No more frames.
2. I'm changing the graphic of Marsha (on the right hand side) to a graphic of myself as drawn by Brock Rizy.
3. Adding more content:
The entire 24 page mini-comic "Some Other Day" will be available to read online. Also, both Rough Cut short stories, my Silent Forest and Western Tales of Terror short stories will be available in their entirety.

Any other suggestions for improvements to make to the site?

8/15/05 ~ If it's called "My Space", why do I feel so crowded?

Melissa just joined MySpace (profile) and has been a bit overwhelmed by the friend-whores and pervs that lurk about (blog). In particular, I thought this was rather funny...
I even had one person ask me why would I have a my space if I am a wife and a mother. It's like one big singles bar and I am trying to find the book club that is meeting in the corner booth.
I got a kick out of Melissa's profile. Who I'd like to meet: David Brent. Really? I mean, really?

Love you.

8/15/05 ~ Post a Secret

An amazing and intriguing website (click here)

8/12/05 ~ Do you wanna join the Blast Corps?!

An update on Emily Edison from Brock (click here)

This is the kind of "super hero" comic I have always wanted to write. It is absolutely unlike anything else on the shelf right now. Emily kicks ass.

8/10/05 ~ Everything is going to be all right.

Chapter one of my online novel Let's Get Lost has been posted on Velvet Goat.

Justin Stewart did an amazing job with the website. I'm so happy to have my work included with everyone else's.

The plan is (I think) to post a new chapter every Wednesday. I'll keep you updated on that.

8/9/05 ~ More pin-ups

8/8/05 ~ The Art of Mischief

I'm compiling a list of practice jokes (to contribute)

8/8/05 ~ Ahoy!

And a new webcomic is born. Check out Pat Bussey's The Horrible Pirates.

8/8/05 ~ B+ for Karma

A nice review of Karma Incorporated #1 from Guy LeCharles Gonzalez of Buzzscope.(click here)

Imagine David Fincher's The Game played for laughs, and you wouldn't be too far off the mark.

And as usual, the reviewer does a better job of summarizing the story than I do.

8/5/05 ~ Austin says hello

This next weekend on Saturday, August 13th from 12 noon to 3 PM, I'll be signing copies of Karma Incorporated #1 at Austin Books. Special thanks to Brad Bankston for setting it up, and for his support of small press comics.

Miscellany:

* Brent Schoonover sent me some character designs for Astronaut Dad. I've loaded them to the site. (click here 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8)

Astronaut Dad is a long term project for us. I wrote the first draft over two years ago. It's encouraging to see Brent's enthusiasm for this story match my own. I couldn't ask for a better artist. Heck, it took me two years to find someone suited for the task. Brent is it. This is exciting.

* Speaking of exciting, Brock has been working furiously on Emily Edison #2. I've seen thumbnail sketches for the entire issue... and damn. It looks good, really good. Really, really good.

I finished the script for issue three, so this project is moving along at a nice pace. Expect it sometime in early 2006, as of right now, no specific dates set.

* Karma Incorporated is completely finished and off to the printers. Issue one is in stores now. Issue two will come out sometime later this month, with the last issue following in September. No rest for colorist Marlena Hall though. She immediately went from working on Karma to Dead@17: The Protectorate. The Protectorate #1 is in Previews this month (order code AUG053251), written by Alex Hambry and illustrated by Benjamin Hall. It's a story about one of my favorite characters-- Jake Sullivan, who you might remember from Rough Cut, Vol. 1.

* I will be reading an excerpt from my online novel-in-progress Let's Get Lost (featured on Velvet Goat) at Art Night, taking place at the Arlington Art Museum, hosted by Axxess. The event is on Sunday, August 21st from 6:30 PM to 10 PM. More information coming soon.

* Yes, I did indeed get a My Space account. My website traffic has steadily increased ever since, so cool. Thanks for visiting.

* Finished reading Beneath the Underdog by Charles Mingus, a slightly disturbing, but still enjoyable read. Now, as a promise to Melissa, I'm reading Harry Potter. I know I'm going to love it, but I fear one more obsession may be one too many. Do you think I can read all six books by Christmas? I'm a notoriously slow reader.

Other books I'm looking forward to...
The Quitter, written by Harvey Pekar, illustrated by Dean Haspiel (DC/Vertigo)
Strangetown, written by Ian Shaughnessy, illustrated by Chynna Clugston (Oni Press)
Local, written by Brian Wood, illustrated by Ryan Kelly (Oni Press)

Movies I'm looking forward to...
Serenity (duh)
V for Vendetta
Elizabethtown
Walk the Line

8/4/05 ~ No AC

Local artist Sarah Jane Semrad posted some photos from the release party last week. (click here)

On a completely unrelated note, Melissa, Kennedy, and I returned from the family reunion to discover our AC isn't working. It's one o'clock in the morning, and it's so hot right now. We're calling the repairman tomorrow. Hopefully, it won't be too expensive.
