7/29/05 ~ Indie Show

7/28/05 ~ Instant Karma
The past two days have been rather busy, so I apologize I haven't been able to update my blog as quickly as I'd like.
The release party was very, very cool. I posted some photos on the forum. I was a little bit dazed by how well it turned out-- one of those rare moments where everything comes together. And you definately need to order a copy of "The Vice and Virtue Ministry" CD from the Happy Bullets. Listen to it while you read the series.
I'll be posting more photos on my 12 fluid ounces scrapbook soon.
7/25/05 ~ Busy week
* Listening to George Carlin on my iTunes right now. Brilliant.
* Release party tomorrow. Have I mentioned it enough?
* I sent Justin my first Velvet Goat contribution, which should be available online sometime this week. The first chapter in a collection of illustrated prose I'm titling "Let's Get Lost". Ah yes, I can do more than write scripts (or at least, let's hope so). And watch out, I'm also attempting the illustrations. A little side project. Let me know what you think.
* The day has come. Karma Incorporated #1 will be in stores on Wednesday. I'll be signing copies at Lone Star Comics in Dallas from 4 pm to 7 pm.
* By Thursday, I plan to post an audioblog commentary on issue one-- a page for page observation on this series I love so much.
7/24/05 ~ Serenity updates
The international trailer has been released, and it is marvelous (click here).
Joss Whedon posted about the Comic-Con panelHey guys. Just wanted to weigh in by saying that I too was a little thrown by aspects of the panel (and no, i'm not talknig about the now-infamous Angel Role-Playing question). It did seem shorter than usual, and now I know that it was. (We also didn't sign for as long, and in a room where no one could see us.) Personally, I think I was off my game a bit. (Jewel might agree, hhnnn...) Usually I have questions for the cast if there aren't many coming and this time I was confused and frightened by the noise and flashing lights, not unlike Kong. (The original film, not the panel.) And yes, Hall H is not exactly an intimate venue. Having said that, the big-ass room did mean there were some non-fans present, which is really important for spreading the word. And the cast are all so dreamy. Nathan's "time-rock" speech had me in tears. A classic. I did have a great deal of fun. My complaint is much like anyone else's: not enough time with the cast. They flew in, they flew out-- I felt like Lois Lane.
But it was tops of Uni to get that screening together-- especialy since I'd completed the film not 48 hours earlier (if anyone wonders why I looked tired, or mumbled, or signed my name "Jo Mnhuh", that’s why). And the Con was cool-- finally had enough time to walk the floors for a good long while. Bought some art, chatted with some famous artists who are CLOSE PERSONAL FRIENDS of mine... And the browncoat booth looked fab. Professional, big, bustling-- the Ethel Mermen of booths. Very gratifying.
My very favorite thing was the Equality Now postcard with all my heroines on it. Beautifully designed and it actually made me a little weepy. Made me feel like I matter, and not just because I'm CLOSE PERSONAL FRIENDS with so many well known artists.
Thanks to everyone I met for being so nice. We should do this again some time.
Ever Vigilant, -j.
7/23/05 ~ Another dot com
Thanks to the fine people at dot easy, yet another website has entered into the world. It may be quite a few months until there's an actual website at this domain. Until then, you can enjoy the "under construction" page.
7/21/05 ~ Shop Viper Online
Karma Incorporated #1 and the Comic-Con 2005 Edition are now available for sale online (click here) at Viper Comics dot com. Paypal friendly. Although, I'd recommend as a first option to support your local comic book retailer, if they carry Karma Incorporated.
Also, don't forget the forum. Share your opinions, theories, insight, suggested soundtrack, favorite pranks, or whatever.
7/20/05 ~ Store signings
With Karma Incorporated #1 coming out next Wednesday (don't forget the release party), I'm doing a few store signings...
Wednesday, July 27th, 4pm to 7pm Lone Star Comics in Dallas Saturday, July 30th, 12noon to 3pm Lone Star Comics in Central Arlington
Also, trying to set up a signing in Austin, TX. No details yet. And for issue two, we're planning a Wednesday signing at Zeus Toys and Comics.
7/19/05 ~ SDCC recap
* I posted all my photos from San Diego on the Fanboy Radio forum (click here). I also loaded some of them onto my 12floz scrapbook section.
* One of the highlights of the whole week was attending the Serenity panel, which Melissa posted about on her blog.
* It was great being able to meet Tom Kurzanski for the first time. On Wednesday night, we grabbed some food from Wendy's and hung out in the hotel room.
* Seems like most everyone had some traveling horror story-- Otis Frampton's luggage ended up in Denver, Gregory Giordano's luggage simply disintegrated into thin air, Tom's flight was delayed for four hours or so, the Fanboy Radio fliers ended up at a warehouse (instead of Oliver's hotel).
* Brent Schoonover, along with my family, and I went to a nice resturant on Thursday night. Brent ran into Stan Lee on the way to meeting us, which is cool. Brent showed me some of his character sketches for Astronaut Dad, a project we're working on together. They look amazing. Can't wait to show them to everyone.
* Also on Thursday night, the Viper crew hung out on the second floor of the 500 West. It was a lot fun.
* I spent less money this year. My only major purchase was for the hardcover edition of Project: Superior (limited to 200 copies and numbered) from AdHouse Books. I went around and got it signed by several of the anthology's contributors: Jeffrey Brown, Tara McPherson, Jim Rugg, Scott Morse, Brian Wood, Jim Mahfood, Doug Fraser, Dean Haspiel, James Jean, Ronnie del Carmen, Chris Pitzer, and Ragnar.
* My mom came down and stayed in the room next to us. She looked after Kennedy, so Melissa and I could enjoy the Con. Really fortunate to have my mom there, without her it would've been difficult.
* The Eisners were incredible. The event itself lasted a bit longer than usual, but much of that was do to the several tributes made to Will Eisner. Melissa, myself, and the rest of the Viper crew had our own table, which I consider a real honor. I certainly appreciate Jessie setting that up. Of course, the table next to us was a different matter all together. One writer was answering his cell phone during the awards show, while his publisher was talking throughout the entire event-- including the "in memory" segment. Show a little respect.
* Afterwards, a bunch of us went to the Hyatt to hang out and have a few drinks. The bar on top floor was too crowded, so we went to the less crowded one of the floor level. We met a lot of people there-- the place to go in the evening.
* Oliver Tull's short film Equilateral was featured during the Comic Con film festival. Very entertaining. The audience loved it. I was particularly pleased to see the protagonist crying like a baby while reading my mini-comic. Lovely.
* The Fanboy Radio panel was my very first panel. And what a great line up! Scott and Oliver moderated with guests Joe Quesada, Robert Kirkman, Scott Kurtz, Jim Lujan and myself.
* The Viper booth was extremely busy. Jaime Delarosa, productions director, and PJ the mighty intern did a great job running the booth, which allowed Jessie and Jim to get more work done at the Con. It felt good to sit next to Tom and Marlena, and sign copies of issue one. Karma Incorporated will be in stores on Wednesday, July 27 (don't forget the release party). The online Viper store will also be selling posters, buttons, and t-shirts.
* Met a lot people in the exhibition hall (too many to name, I tried and then gave up) -- in particular, Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir were very nice.
* The Asshole of the Con 2005 Award goes to some anonymous guy who spit on Scott Kurtz (read about it here, Scott also commented about the situation on his website) What the hell? If anyone knows who this person is, he deserves a swift kick to the head.
* My only major complaint about SDCC is with the film studios who seem to think the convention is all about them now. Some of the trailers and sneak peeks they were showing at their booths, where extremely gory and violent, and just not appropriate for an all-ages crowd. I saw one family that had to cover their daughter's eyes as they walked past. Generally speaking, the comic book publishers are far more respectful about such matters.
I'm sure there's more to say that I'm forgetting. I might post more later.
7/19/05 ~ A brand new J-Lu
The new website for jimlujan dot com
Also, check out this preview of Lujan's newest project Sunshine & the Candyman.
7/18/05 ~ Documentary
Went to this panel at SDCC, Espen Jorgensen (the director) showed some clips from his upcoming documenary Sequential Art. It looks really good-- Daniel Clowes, Will Eisner, Neil Gaimon, Roberta Gregory, Sam Kieth, Jim Mahfood, Pat Mills, Scott Morse, Christine Norrie, Team Red Star, Chris Ware, and Judd Winick. Hopefully, they'll post the trailer soon.
In other film/comics news, Sam Kieth has made a film for his Oni graphic novel Ojo. Saw the trailer at the Oni Press panel. It follows right along with the story. I'm excited about seeing this one.
7/17/05 ~ SDCC: The sounds of mass transportation
7/13/05 ~ SDCC: 500 West
7/12/05 ~ What Goes Around...
Comic Book Resources staff writer Arune Singh has posted an interview with Tom and me.For all of you out there who have ever been treated unfairly, fledgling comic book publisher Viper Comics feels your pain and has a solution. Just tell them who you want to hurt in return and they'll do it... on a fictional level at least. (read more here)
7/9/05 ~ Stuck in traffic, thinking about Kinko's
7/9/05 ~ Work that Karma!
Frederik Hautain of Broken Frontier posted a nice interview with me on his site today. (click here)
Okay, that's enough internet for me right now, I've got to pack for San Diego. Melissa, Kennedy, and I are flying to California tomorrow, and visiting with my family for a few days in Newport Beach, before the Comic-Con. We will be there on Preview Night, and all the way to Sunday. Look for us at booth #1949, the Viper Comics booth.
7/8/05 ~ Consumer bliss
The Amazing Joy Buzzards trade paperback is now in stores, collecting issues 1-4 of this series from Image Comics. Not even giant monsters, vicious zombies, vampire robots, or Hollywood can stop The Amazing Joy Buzzards! It is your duty to read this! The power of the Buzzard compells you! Even if you already have the first four issues as ordered from your sub list (like me), the trade is worth getting, because it features pin-ups by Tom Kurzanski and Ryan Cody.
7/5/05 ~ If it's too good to be true...
...it probably isn't. But then again, sometimes you get fortunate. Good news. The Karma Incorporated release party has been confirmed and everything is set. On Tuesday, July 26th at 8 pm, we're debuting Karma Incorporated #1 (not the San Diego exclusive, but the one which will be in stores the following day... same content, different cover). The party will be at the Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum. Cover is $5. And every person who comes gets a free copy of issue #1. The band Happy Bullets will be performing, which is really cool. Their newest album "The Vice and Virtue Ministry" feels like it should be the Karma Incorporated soundtrack, seriously.click here for all the details
click here for a printable flier (pdf) For those people who live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, please bring as many friends as possible. I'm going to try my best to promote it. Tomorrow, I'm driving to Dallas to get the fliers put up.
7/5/05 ~ Version 20.0
At a certain point, why bother with announcing I've changed my website? Just expect that every other week, I'll do something different. Sorry 'bout that. I know these constant new versions must stir up some deep seeded abandonment issues. Antihero Comics offers no promise of consistency. Such is life. Although, this newer site does solve some of the trouble I was having with frames. It's not perfect, but I'm working on it.
Also, Fanboy Radio's July Newsletter is now available. (click here, 3.5 MB pdf)
7/4/05 ~ Gone South
For those going to San Diego, Guy LeMay will be in the small press area with Atomic Basement premiering Gone South #3. You should definately check it out.
Guy and I worked on the Dead@17:Rough Cut story "The Sparrow". Very talented artist.
7/3/05 ~ The Curmudgeon Strikes!
My partner-in-karma Tom Kurzanski has his launched his new website.
It looks great, beautiful design. (Certainally challenges me to get my own website in better shape, before leaving for San Diego.) Check it out!
7/3/05 ~ More dust
Please excuse the mess. I'm getting stuff ready for San Diego. As a result, this website will look funky for awhile. Apologies. Everything will be pretty soon.
7/1/05 ~ Release party
Okay, my small little get-together somehow morphed into a full-out huge ass party. (How do these things happen?) Mark your calendar, oh friends of mine!
KARMA INCORPORATED RELEASE PARTY Tuesday night, July 26th at Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum (Dallas, TX) with the band Happy Bullets performing
