10/30/04 ~ sneak peek of page 17 (top half)

Brock Rizy has a slightly larger version of these three panels on his website, and some more early looks at Emily Edison Battles the Badbots.

From me, the Emily Edison comic book came into being for two reasons: (1) I wanted to write a fun super hero story for younger readers. Not by writing down to them, but instead, to create something that's appealing on a broad level. (2) I wanted to work with Brock.

I've been fortunate to collaborate with some very talented artists (Brian Kelly, Ben Hall, Sean Stephens, and Tom Kurzanski). Each of them, I like for different reasons-- Brian is a sociopath, Ben smells nice, Sean is part machine, and Tom... well... when asked what are 5 things he can't live without, he said: Sakura Micron pens: 03, 05, and 08, silver halide, and pink frosted animal crackers. Dude.

With Brock, this guy's imagination is only matched by his ability to draw whatever enters into his head. That's a dangerous mix. I'm still learning, when you write for Brock-- it's all about giving him room to do what he does best.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm probably biased, but I'm also right. Brock's got skills. Right now, he's in the process of getting some pages finished before Wizard World Texas. And I certainly appreciate the time he's committed. So thanks.

Next week, I'll brag on Tom. :)

10/28/04 ~ Western Tales of Terror #2

This year, I'll have written four different short stories for four different anthologies. These anthologies mark my first appearances in the blessed Previews catalog. Writing a good short story is a real challenge. It's about being able to communicate as much information as possible in as little space as necessary, being interesting and entertaining from page one until the end. Hopefully, I've done that.

Josh Fialkov gives the 411 on an upcoming anthology, Western Tales of Terror--

WESTERN TALES OF TERROR #2 IN NOVEMBER PREVIEWS

In Previews now, issue 2 of the horror anthology that Wizard Magazine says "packs the chamber with six piercing stories that'll blow your head wide open!" Critically acclaimed "Western Tales of Terror" second issue features comic luminary Phil "Green Arrow" Hester writing a story drawn by Nick "IDW's Hyde" Stakal, Todd "The Wicked West" Livingston with Eric "Rex Mundi" J on art, Raven "The Gift" Gregory with newcomer Cardinal, a new Hector Plasm adventure by Benito "Tales from the Bully Pulpit" Cereno and Nate "Invincipals" Bellegarde, part two of "Phineas' Gold" by Editor in Chief Joshua Hale Fialkov, Porter McDonald, and artist Scott Keating, and a story by comics newcomers (and Dead@17 Rough Cut vets) David Hopkins and Benjamin Hall.

"Western Tales of Terror" is the debut Direct Market title from Independent Publisher Hoarse and Buggy Productions, and has garnered acclaim from all corners of the Internet, including Thefourthrail.com, comiXtreme, ComicFanatic.com, and Variety.com. With issue 1 hitting stores next week, make sure to pre-order issue 2 and help spread the word about this breakout indie hit!

WESTERN TALES OF TERROR #2 is available for pre-order from Diamond comics from the current issue of Previews, order number NOV042745, on Page 293 of the November Previews.

Our story for Western Tales was a lot of fun to work on. Ben Hall is incredibly talented-- and it's always comforting to have that kind of artist collaborating with you. Don't forget to pre-order this month! Let me know what you think, once you get the chance to read it.

10/27/04 ~ FBR #191 and 191.5

Last night, Scott Hinze and I sat down in the KTCU studios to pre-record episodes 191 and 191.5 for Fanboy Radio. You can listen to both episodes online by downloading them using bitpass. If you don't have bitpass yet, you really should consider getting it. You can also listen to episode 191 on KTCU 88.7 FM in Fort Worth at 1 PM today.

Episode 191 is our October Indie Show with Eisner-award winning creator Derek Kirk Kim and president/founder of Crazee Comics, Samuel Vera.

Episode 191.5 is a "web-only" show-- a thirty minute beginner's workshop for comic book writers. We talk about format, structure, pacing, dialogue, and offer some ideas for improving as a storyteller. We're trying it out to see what kind of response we get. Honestly, I feel a little foolish talking about how to write, considering how many better writers are out there that could (and have) talked on this very subject. But after listening to it, I think there's some good material available. Best of all, it's only 25 cents to download.

10/26/04 ~ More of the Same Tomorrow

Last night, I checked the stats for my Antihero Comics website. Much to my surprise, this domain has ten times the amount of traffic I thought it did. Cool, huh? I figured it was time to fix the site a bit, with more changes coming soon.

The past two years have been amazing. Got married. Moved into a house. Became a dad. And all the while, I've been writing.

I've been fortunate in my work. Recently, I published a few short stories for three different anthologies (Dead@17:Rough Cut, Vol.1, Silent Forest Television Parody Special, and Western Tales of Terror #2). Next year is going to be even better. While I can't give too many details, I have a three issue series (32 pages each) with a small press publisher that will be stores by July 2005. Hopefully soon, I'll have an official announcement. I couldn't have asked for a better situation. The publisher loves what we're doing. And hey, I love what they're doing. My friends, and especially my wife, have been so supportive. It's taken a lot of the pressure off, allowing me to focus on simply writing the best stories I can.

Over this past year, I've gotten more and more involved with Fanboy Radio, becoming the host and producer for the monthly "indie show". It's been an opportunity to talk with some of my favorite comic book creators. I also started writing a weekly column "Just Smile and Nod" (each Monday) where I look at comics as a literary medium and artform.

On a personal level, these past few months have been entirely about my daughter, Kennedy! She's the coolest. To even begin to talk about her, I'd become a rambling sentimental mess. I'll save you that fate.

So here it is, the latest spin is back on antiherocomics.com. Say hi. Let me know what you think-- or don't. I'll try my best to give you all the gory details of my little life on a semi-regular basis.
