4/29/2004 ~ My Dad is Crazy! (A 24-Hour Comic Book)
The complete comic is now available online in the comics+scripts section. For $1 through paypal, you can view and/or download it... and in the process, support Antihero.
In My Dad is Crazy!, a delusional father raises his daughter on the belief she was a super hero rocketed to Earth from a distant planet. The art is simple, but the story aims to capture the complexities found within any family.
After reading over it: I just noticed... on page 23, the chair magically disappeared! Where did it go?
4/27/2004 ~ April Indie Show on FBR
Last Sunday, Scott and I recorded the April edition of the Indie Show for Fanboy Radio. The show will air this Wednesday, April 28th at 1 PM CST on 88.7 KTCU and streaming live on the internet. This month features Jasen Lex, creator of Gypsy Lounge, and Jim Rugg, creator of Street Angel published through SLG. Both are very talented individuals. I enjoyed talking with them.
4/25/2004 ~ I did it!
I successfully completed the 24 hour comic book challenge-- create a 24 page comic book (story, pencil, and ink) within 24 hours. I had a great time. This experience, for me, was nothing short of amazing. I have never spent 24 hours working on a single task. The fact that I can't draw, added an interesting element to the challenge. (I'm not being modest... my abilities are minimal, at best.) However, I didn't want to cop out with stick figures. I attempted to draw as best I could.
The artists did some great work-- Josh Howard, Ben Hall, Matt Raney, Khalid Robertson, Scott Kurtz, Greg Thompson, and Robbi Rodriguez among others. I was very impressed by the quality of work they were able to produce in such conditions. Lone Star was wonderfully hospitable.
Sleepiness wasn't as much of a factor as I thought it would be. I was exhausted, but not drowsy. Some people had fallen asleep at their work area, pencil in hand. The ipod was invaluable to tune out (pun intended) surrounding chatter and noises. My biggest problem was my hand. After about sixteen hours of drawing, it really began to hurt (still does). By the last hour, every line I drew ached. My hand was shaking, and it was difficult to get a straight line.
As soon as I'm able, I'll post my 24 hour comic online. [click here for photos of the event]
4/19/2004 ~ Weekend Adventures
Jeff Elden and his friends Dave, Traci, and Andrea stayed at our house this weekend. Jeff and Dave are filming a documentary on mini-comics/creators who independently produce their work. They interviewed me on Friday night, which was fun. I sat at my computer and tried to look as witty and intelligent as possible.
On Saturday, we drove to the Dallas Comic Con where they interviewed some more people. I was fortunate to meet Matt Raney of Comics 42 (which is a great book) and the crew from Hero Camp (also a great book). Later that day, we had a cook-out at the house. The charcoal took awhile to get going, but we had a nice fire eventually. My friends Clay, Greg (and his daughter Olivia), and Scott also stopped by.
On Sunday, we all went to the zoo (photos posted soon). Afterwards, Jeff and I joined hosts Scott and Oliver for episode 149 of Fanboy Radio. Topic? Super Hero Movies. Needless to say, it's been a busy weekend. I'm worn out.
David, you can't even draw!
Um, yeah, I know. Consider it a learning experience or just sick curiousity, but I've signed up to participate in the 24 Hour Comics Day event hosted by Lone Star Comics. I will be at the comic book store from 11 AM Saturday morning April 24th until 11 AM Sunday morning April 25th. Yep, all through the night!
The goal? To create a complete 24 page comic book (pencilled and inked) in 24 continuous hours. No direct preparation is allowed-- no sketches, designs, or plot summaries can precede the 24 hour period. I can bring reference materials, my own art supplies, food, music, etc.
There will be lots of talented people participating in this dare-- Josh Howard and Scott Kurtz for instance. And then, there will be me. The way I figure it, I have ten days to become a better artist. Right?
Good, bad, or just plain ugly, I'll post my 24 hour comic online for all to enjoy. With the iPod and a 12 pack of Coca-Cola, I'll be fine. Come by the store and say "hi".
