Roxanne's review of Some Other Day and Alfred Hitchcock
My friend Roxanne Bielskis wrote a very kind review of Some Other Day in Diverging Comics [read here].
For me, there is practically no greater compliment than to be compared (if even loosely) to one of the great visual storytellers, Alfred Hitchcock. On film, he created a visual language that has boldly shaped modern storytelling. To understand how Hitchcock used angles, lighting, pacing, montage, and placement in the frame would benefit any visual writer. Grab a notebook and watch Vertigo, The Birds, Psycho, North by Northwest, Rear Window, among others, and it would be an invaluable learning experience. In particular, I'd recommend this book.
For Roxanne to mention Hitchcock in her review was quite a treat. Thanks.
FBR #142 went well...

From Josh Cotter
Both Rob and Josh are great guys, very talented. It was cool getting to talk with them. (Although, I sense a little anxiety in these two strips.)

Coming soon... Just Smile and Nod
A Look at Comics as Literature and Art
Weekly Fanboy Radio Column by David Hopkins
JUST SMILE AND NOD is a 400 word column that moves beyond the commercialism and industry aspects of the medium, and instead explores how comic books work as a narrative medium and as an artform. Think of it as Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics" or "Reinvented Comics" and Will Eisner's "Graphic Storytelling", but as dialogue and ongoing discussion.
Also, the end of each column will feature a 100 word "mini-comics spotlight". Not a review or preview, but simply a glance at some of the mini-comics that are floating around out there.
In an effort to get a head start on the column, I've already started work on them. Currently, I'm on my third week.
